Duane Alexander, MD, director of the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, will receive the William G. Bartholome Award for Ethical Excellence October 18 during the Section on Bioethics program, "Ethical Issues in Adolescent Medicine." Dr Alexander is well known both for his research in developmental disabilities and for prioritizing that research dollars from the National Institutes of Health focus on vulnerable children. For more than a decade, Dr Alexander has also served as the United States' observer on the Steering Committee on Bioethics for the Council of Europe.
